Should I use LCL or FCL shipping?

Firstly, you should work out if you can fill (or nearly fill) a full container. Containers typically come in sizes of 20′ (Twenty foot equivalent units or TEUs) and 40′ (Forty foot equivalent units or FEUs). With containers, volume is almost always more important than weight (conversely to air freight).

When using LCL, prices are normally given for cubic metre measurements (cbm), with a minimum price of 1 cbm being used even for very small shipments. A 20 foot container has a volume of 33 cbm, a 40 foot container 66 cbm. If your shipment mostly fills one of these containers, FCL shipping can be more efficient and provides more control over your own stock.

What size are FCL containers?

The most typical sizes of containers are:

20 foot (Twenty foot equivalent unit or TEU):
20′ long x 8′ wide x 8.5′ high (6.1m x 2.4m x 2.6m)
40 foot (Forty foot equivalent unit or FEU):
40′ long x 8′ wide x 8.5′ high (12.2m x 2.4m x 2.6m)

These containers offer ample volume for most commercial goods, but for the transport of refrigerated goods, large equipment and other items with specific requirements then other types of containers are available. If you’re having difficulty understanding how to transport more complicated loads the simplest thing to do is to contact CCT and benefit from our experience and expertise in freight forwarding.
